John "Jack" Newbern a first cousin four times removed was born about 1824 in Georgia, the son of Jackson Newbern and Mary "Pollie" Lott. Jack enlisted as a private on 25 September 1861 in Company G and died in service to the CSA at Savannah, Georgia in 1862. National Archives Microfilm Box, Roll, and Record: 000226, 0045, 00001396
William J. Newbern a first cousin four times removed was born about 1838 in Georgia, the son of Jackson Newbern and Mary "Pollie" Lott. William enlisted as a private in Co G/H on 10 July 1862. He is listed as deserted, took oath of allegiance to U.S. Government at Atlanta on 29 September 1864 and again at Louisville, Kentucky on 16 October 1864. At the organization of the Thirtieth regiment Georgia volunteers the following were the field officers: Col. David J. Bailey; Lieut.-Col. Miles M. Tidwell; Maj. Cicero A. Thorpe; Commissary A. N. McLarty; Quartermaster J. C. Hightower; Adjt. J. W. McCord. The captains were John L. Barnett (A), H. Hendrick (B), J. G. Lindsey (c), Thomas C. Bartlett (D), Robert M. Hitch (E), William N. McGouirk (F), John Edmondson (G), Francis M. Harrell (H), C. A. Dollar (I), Wm. B. Richards (K). The Thirtieth served until the spring of 1863 in the department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida; then went to Mississippi, with other regiments already mentioned, forming the brigade of Col. C. C. Wilson, and served under him at Chickamauga, soon after which he was promoted to brigadier general. After his death in November, 1863, the Thirtieth was assigned to the brigade of General Stevens, of Walker's division. It served through the Atlanta, Tennessee and Carolina campaigns, surrendering with Johnston near Goldsboro. During this time its officers succeeding those already named were Cols. Thomas W. Mangham and James S. Boynton; Majs. J. R. Boynton and Henry Hendrick; Commissary J. C. Little. Felix L. Matthall became captain of Company A, R. J. Andrews of C, Hudson Whittaker of D, John McLeod of E, and George T. Longino of K.

Company A: Butts County men-Butts Invincibles. This company became Company I, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company B: Butts County men-Bailey Volunteers. This company became Company A, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company C: Spalding and Butts County men-Hunter Guards. This company became Company F, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company D: Bibb County men-Hugeney/Huguenin Rifles.
Company E: Henry County men-Bartow Invincibles. This company became Company B, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company F: Campbell County men-Campbell Sharpshooters. This company became Company C, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company G: Campbell County men-Campbell Grays. This company became Company H, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company H: Fayette County men-Fayette Volunteers. This company became Company G, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company I: Clayton County men-Clayton Invincibles. This company became Company E, upon reorganization in 1862.
Company K: Campbell County men-Chattahoochee Volunteers
